Neighborhood

The neighborhood:
Keaau sits along the Big Island’s lush Puna Coast, south of Hilo, where rural roads pass rainforest, lava landscapes, and dramatic shoreline. A car is essential here, but it opens up a rewarding mix of coastal lookouts, black-sand beaches, and Hilo’s farmers market and local restaurants. Shipman Beach is nearby for turtle watching, while Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park makes a memorable day trip. This is a quieter, more rural part of the island for families who prefer sea cliffs and tropical greenery over a busy resort scene.

Transit

Getting around:
Hilo International Airport is about 20 minutes away, a quick and easy drive. A rental car is recommended for reaching the Puna coast's beaches and Hilo's shopping and dining just down the road. Keaau itself is a small community with a modest walkable center, so most errands call for a short drive. Parking is generally simple and available on site.

Boasting over 2,300 square feet of living space, and panoramic ocean views throughout, an idyllic island retreat await at Mele Kai, a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath getaway located mere steps from the coast. Highlights include a spacious and private primary suite, a gourmet kitchen, and ocean-view alfresco dining. Spend fun-filled days viewing sea turtles at Shipman Beach, sampling the culture and cuisine of nearby Hilo, exploring black sand beaches, or venturing to Hawaii Volcano National Park for an epic geological expedition. Unwind into vacation mode under the soaring vaulted ceiling in the living area, furnished with a sofa and two armchairs. In the evening, settle in to enjoy favorite shows on the 60-inch TV. Slide open the glass doors and enjoy the soothing sounds of the waves. Prepare fresh meals in the gourmet kitchen, equipped with granite countertops and a full suite of high-end appliances. While dinner simmers, perch at the island bar with seating for four. When it’s time to eat, gather around the four-person dining table.

This two-story home sleeps six guests in three bedrooms. Find ultimate comfort in the spacious main suite, complete with a stately king bed and walk-in closet, as well as a private lanai with seating for two and panoramic ocean views. The en-suite bathroom is configured with a double vanity and a walk-in shower with custom stonework. The two guest rooms are both furnished with a full-size bed. The guest bathroom includes an enchanting outdoor shower with two showerheads. A half bath provides added convenience. Start the day with fresh Kona coffee and inspiring ocean views on the back lanai. In the evening, dine alfresco at the outdoor table, which seats four comfortably. Extra perks include complimentary WiFi and a washer/dryer.

Access

This Mele Kai home in Keaau offers a private entrance and its own patio for relaxing outdoors. Guests are close to the beach and can walk the lit path to the entrance at night with ease. In unit laundry and a full kitchen round out a comfortable, self contained stay near the coast.

This house was The Hilo Hawaii experience for us! Steps away from the lava cliff ocean side! Unique little elements (the shower areas!!) of this house make it high end and such an experience; Almost made it hard to want to leave each day to explore the area… do note, There is a public spot just in the back side of the house that locals like to come to park, sometimes music was loud… but typically stopped by midnight. All beaches in HI are public and we couldn’t blame them! We enjoyed walking back and forth having outside too! Overall it was safe and we will definitely recommend for a family to enjoy!!

This house is exactly as described. We loved many aspects of this house: the lanai, the walkway to the cliffs behind the house, the outdoor shower, the spaciousness & layout of the home, and the view / location. It is in a residential area, so it is mostly quiet. The tree frogs did talk most of the time, but it became relaxing. Yes, there was a free-range rooster that sang to us in the morning, but it wasn't too bad. It did not hinder our stay. Yes, the cliffs do attract a few locals throughout the day, but they are quiet. We didn't notice any loud noises during our stay. Overall, we all loved this house.

Our family enjoyed this house. We were able to spread out and each room had its own access to the outside. It‚Äôs well stocked. Get groceries before you arrive. The view from the house is lovely and don‚Äôt forget to check out Maku‚Äôu Point at the end of the road. All beaches are open to the public in Hawaii. This cliff is not an exception. Loved the outdoor shower!

In town for the Merrie Monarch festival so traveling back and forth to Hilo multiple times a day. Commute was good even during night traffic times. House very nice and spacious. Loved the showers; outdoor downstairs. Grounds very nice and can hear the ocean if leave windows open
