The house is beautifully decorated, open, airy and unique! Great back patio surrounded by dense greenery. Enjoy falling asleep to the coqui frogs singing! Gated property helps you feel extra safe and secure. Comfortable beds, gorgeous bathrooms and a great open kitchen/dining room/living.
Close to village stores and restaurants. We absolutely love this house and how close it is to the volcano park!! This was our second stay and it won’t be our last!

Lovely retreat in Volcano

This was without a doubt the nicest vacation rental we have ever had. Beautiful building, stunningly decorated and completely equipped. We were somewhat surprised at the posted rating of 9 near the inside entrance. This was way beyond a 10. We had a few days of rainy weather and it was nice to have such a wonderful retreat to spend the time indoors.

Booking and staying could not have been easier or more comfortable! We did a staycation with friends - 4 adults and 3 children in all. There was plenty of room and a well-appointed kitchen for cooking. We did several hikes inside and outside of the Park. Lots of great memories made!

Gorgeous home with stunning art and decor. Well appointed kitchen. Stunning backyard and back deck with amazing jungle foliage surrounding. The singing frogs, geckos and pheasants added to the experience! The beds were super comfortable and the bathrooms were beautiful! We are a family of 5 and we enjoyed cooking meals at home, playing outside and watching movies! We can say enough about how gorgeous and well laid out the house is! Our three kids shared a king bed and enjoyed cuddling on the custom window seat/couch to watch movies. We enjoyed a fire in the fireplace too! We will definitely look into renting again next time we come to Hawaii!!! Our kids LOVED it!!!

Waking up to the morning bird sound and the rustling forest is simply something you have to be there to fully experience. My wife loved it, my friends loved the interior decor and couldn’t believe the value for the buck. I loved the convenience of being 5 minutes from the national park entrance, the tranquil quality of the backyard. I had a fine relaxed stay, something I haven’t enjoyed for quite a while. Thanks!
Gorgeous, well equipped home!
Mary P. · Apr 2025
The house is a complete gem. Beautiful, spacious, well designed architecture and layout. Lovely furnishings and decor (some Asian inspired). The lanai and yard are beautiful and so peaceful. We felt like we were in the womb of the forest! No bugs whatsever, but birds, and nightly sounds of frogs. The owners have been very thoughtful in many details. Lighting, kitchen supplies, linen cupbards well stocked, etc. Everything so clean, organized and comfortable. We loved the feeling of utter peace and isolation, and loved being an 8 min drive into Volcanoes National Park. And a few minutes' to the several restaurants and basic shops in the 'village'. The key pad code to enter the house was not working, but the Vacasa people answered the help line quickly and talked me through how to get into the lockbox for a key.
Beautiful home in lush paradise
Emily · Apr 2025
We so enjoyed our stay in this amazing house. From all the beautiful decor features, to the kitchen amenities, really comfy beds, and the amazing back porch -this house was a gem. The location to volcano national park allowed us to return to the park 3x in one day. Would highly recommend this place to others who want a more private, tropical garden rental.
Beautiful
Erin T. · Apr 2025
An amazing property. the only downfall was access to nearbye reasonably priced food. Also, a bracelet was left behind we think. We were told they would let us know if they found it and did not hear back (99% sure it was left on shelf in bathroom upstairs). But the comfort, the quietness, cleanliness, and personal touches to this home were beyond amazing for us. If you are looking for a quiet, clean, incredibly comfortable tropical "jungle" type experience, this is the place!
Beautiful home, all the details
Josh · Mar 2025
This home came with everything we could have needed. The owners have thought of so many things needed for a stay. We also loved the architecture and furnishings of this home. Fantastic setting, as well.
Spacious and gorgeous
Rebecca J. · Mar 2025
Two bedrooms both with comfy beds, beautiful lighting and outstanding showers. The large family room has enough beds and couches to accommodate the full 8 person max. An outdoor heated shower head made cleaning off from the beach a delightful experience and the property in general provides bountiful botanical delights. Full kitchen with more dishes than you could possibly use, and no empty cabinets for food. Plan on using counter space for any groceries. Info states the water isn't potable but we found the house was equipped with drinkable water filtration system so that's a plus! The property is not fully accessible but for the fully able it's a wonderful spot!!! Would definitely stay again
INCREDIBLE

We stayed at Hale Hapu'u in June 2024 and loved it! It was the best set up for us while we visited Volcano, HI. We had two families with teenagers, so the set up was great! The kids loved exploring around the property and listening to the tree frogs at night. The location was perfect, the drive to Volcanoes National Park was super close. We enjoyed spending an entire day in the park and having a quick drive back to the house. We loved the house, the decor was awesome, appliances and kitchen were great because we were able to make meals for the whole crew and hang out playing board games and cards at night. The hosts were great, they checked in with us to make sure we had everything we needed and didn't have any questions. We would highly recommend Hale Hapu'u, the hosts and Vacasa. A++++

Loved this home! Besides the gorgeous scenery and peaceful, secluded setting in a beautiful tropical garden, you must appreciate the owner's taste and attention to detail. The carved doors and furniture pieces are gorgeous. The home is full of charm and character. Very spacious and cozy space. Plenty of clean linens and beach towels. There was no funky smell, contrary to some reviews. Thank you for making our time in the Volcano so comfortable and memorable. Would definitely rent it again.

This was one of the most unique, fanciest and coziest places we have ever stayed. Every inch of the home was well decorated and the most well stocked home we've ever stayed in. We loved the layout and spaciousness of the home. There were so many cozy places to relax in. The back deck was so peaceful, surrounded by the lush rainforest. We are usually on the go during our vacations, this was a house I could definitely see myself spending a week doing nothing but relaxing in the home. It is incredibly close to the National Park and Hilo isn't far, about 40 minutes away which has a ton of activities, food and shopping. Black Sand Beach is also about 40 minutes away, highly recommend. It was a really great central location for all the activities we did on the east side of the island. On the last day we were there, wild pigs appeared in the back yard which was really awesome. Again, highly recommend!!!

The house is beautiful- lots of wood and character. Furniture is all nice. The kitchen is nicely equipped. Beautiful showers with view of the outdoors. The fireplace is wonderful. We enjoyed sitting out on the comfortable back porch. The location is very good. Totally quiet. All we heard were birds and the feral
pigs that came in the yard. Close to the National Park (5 minutes max). We stay in vacation rentals a lot and this is much better than most. Highly recommended!

From the moment, we drove into the driveway, the house and grounds for nothing but spectacular. The ground themselves were lush and well cared for. The house was beautifully designed, decorated and maintained a well appointed and functional house, great quality appliances and furnishings. We are a large family and I found it extremely easy to use everything in the house from cooking, to heating and cleaning. All of the beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of space for everyone to sleep and extra linen if needed. The kitchen was as if it was in your own home, great quality, crockery, cutlery, appliances, and serving ware, you could’ve easily catered for a dinner party no trouble.
The selections of books and games for adults and kids are like was vast.
I would highly recommend this place and would definitely definitely go back.
Thank you so much for providing a wonderful house for people to Holiday in.

Beautiful property tucked away near the end of neighborhood and street. The property was just as pictured. Beautiful home, beautifully decorated and surrounded by lush vegetation.
If you plan on staying here, know that there are only a few restaurants in the village. There are only kitchen essentials. No spices or even salt and pepper. You will need to bring all food items and condiments with you. Other than that, it has ample space, nice linens and towels, complimentary bath & body products, and laundry & cleaning essentials.
I loved the sound of the coqui frogs. My husband did not. Lol
There are a pair of birds that roam the yard and a sweet smell in the air from the ginger plants.
I recommend it for those that do not mind being in a rural area and want close proximity to the Volcano National Park.

This is probably the most unique and impressive vacation rental we have been to. The property is amazing! My family of 5 had enough room to spread out and be comfortable. The layout was perfect and it was truly a gem to stay here.
Beds and bathrooms were comfortable and well appointed.
Internet was super, although cell phone reception is spotty in the area (we could still call but at times we had low bars)
Kitchen was well appointed but bring all spices and oils you want because there aren’t any
Beware that the heat and a/c are not the strong points in this rental, but there are space heaters and fans that make it comfortable.
Coqui frogs are plenty and it rains a lot but it all adds to the beauty of the space.
This property is very close to VNP.
Lots of space to work.
All together, we loved our stay and would recommend it to anyone!
Great place to stay in the tropical paradise and close to Volcano NP

I would have taken 0.5 point off the rating for the check-process. An hour before check-in time I received an email giving me the gate code and alarm code, but the entry code "will be sent later." I called on my way there and the person said may be I don't need one since it wasn't given together with other codes. I didn't feel very good about it but I thought I would go see for myself. When we got to the door, there was a keypad obviously requiring a code to get into the house. Called again and got put through 2 more persons, who kept telling me that the issue has been escalated. They told me to try 2 different codes but none worked. Finally, about an hour later, the person from the local office called and told me that the keypad isn't working and told me to go to a lockbox to use the emergency key. This house is managed by Vacasa. There was clearly a poor communication chain between the main and local office and the customer. We were very upset during that hour standing outside, make sure you have all 3 codes before heading over to the house!
Otherwise, the house is beautiful, well-maintained with a great layout and very spacious. The sounds of insects and pouring rain can be very loud through the night. One suggestion would be to put curtains or blinds in the bedrooms. I got woken up by the sun shining right in my eyes before 7am.
The house is about 9 mins from Volcano NP, very convenient to be able to go back and forth if you don't want to visit the park all at once. Tips: to avoid the crowds at night for lava viewing, we had dinner at the house, then headed out after 9pm.
Magical Experience
Michael B. · Jul 2022
We spent three nights in this beautiful home, and wished we could have stayed longer. We were vacationing with another family, and this spacious home worked out perfectly! We were close enough to the volcano to visit it by day and night, seeing the magma glow at night is a must see.
The beauty and comfort of this home combined with the sounds of nature from the rainforest created a magical experience for us. We hope to visit again some day.
Perfect Volcano House

Location to VNP can’t be beat. The house is beautiful, well-equipped, with an amazing back porch. The fireplace came in handy during our cool evenings. It really felt like we were being allowed to stay in someone’s actual home, rather than a vacation rental. We would (perhaps “will”?) stay here again.

This home was even better than I hoped. The sleeping areas in the 2 living rooms were very spacious and comfortable. And it was very good to have a full bath off the common area. This way there was usually no wait even for 8 people. This home is elegant, modern kitchen, baths etc yet solidly built. Every one of us was grateful to be at Hale Hapu'u. Also located in a quiet part of Volcano Village with such beautiful nature surrounding the home.

Great home with lovely rooms and 3 wonderful bathrooms minutes from Volcano National Park. Outside of home looks nothing like the inside - we thought we were at the wrong location when we pulled up - looks like tiny house from street - not from inside or the back ---huge living space that made us feel at home as soon as we walked in the door. Loved it!!

Huge space nicely decorated. Loved the sounds of the forest. Beds very comfy and had everything we needed. The only thing that would have made it better was if they had a hot tub- which we personally would pay an extra $100/night for. Mahalo for letting us stay! One note: the electronic lock needs to be fixed as there was no way to lock the house. Fortunately it’s a safe area. Also disarming the alarm didn’t work but there weren’t any consequences

My granddaughter, her husband and four children ages 6-13 went with me for 8 days to the Big Island. The location was perfect as it is in secluded tropical forest with plenty of family space including a lovely back deck. The home was beautifully furnished with carved doors, beautiful decorative pieces and comfortable furniture. I would love to go there again. We had some problems with the oven but the maintenance company took care of it.

Amazing house in the rainforest!
Matthew O. · Mar 2021
What an absolutely incredible property in the rainforest in Volcano. We awoke every morning to the sound of a chorus of birds and softly falling rain as the sun pierced the clouds. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is less than 10 minutes away, so we easily spent the entire day at the park without a long drive to get back home. The house itself was incredible, just as it appears in the photos.
Tropical haven in sleepy village
Kate M. · Feb 2021
We stayed at this beautiful home as a base to explore Volcanoes National Park and the Puna region. Once we found it (navigate to "Hale Hapu'u" rather than an address if using Google maps) check in was simple and all code-based. Everything was spotless. The home is more spacious than we expected and beautifully designed and decorated with Asian influence. It is one of a kind and created a serene environment, our own oasis.
With three full baths and two bedrooms with king size beds, our family of 4 was comfortable. There is plenty of seating and a well stocked kitchen for those inclined to cook or entertain a small gathering.
The hosts and Vrbo staff were very helpful and responsive answering a question about the alarm system.
The only downsides, which we knew going in, were the very limited services available in town. Volcano is clearly a B&B community so finding breakfast was a real challenge. We ended up grabbing cereal and bananas at the small store in town. I recommend meals at the volcano house in the park (which is allowing dine I seating, just not table service), Kilouea Lodge (excellent dinner and historic property) or heading all the way to Pahoa.
We are very satisfied with our stay but would probably choose something more urban if we visit the area again.
awesome!

Sublime serenity
Kathy · Jan 2021
We were blown away by how beautiful this place is. Stepping through the carved wood front door our jaws dropped and we were visited by a sense of calm as our eyes feasted on the lovely wood. The bedrooms are huge and bathrooms something else. Showering with a floor to ceiling view of the rainforest is unique. The kitchen is super-well equipped and the owners have left a lot of useful things there. The enormous lanai is a perfect place to hang in the hammock, enjoy a meal outside or lounge in the easy chairs. Location is also great - under 10mins the the park entrance. The same to the few cafes/restaurants in Volcano village.

Divine rainforest serenity
Kathy C. · Jan 2021
When we first arrived in this house our jaws dropped. The layout and decor are superb and location great for Volcano. The place is super well equipped, awesomely quiet and comfortable. A perfect romantic getaway. We’d have been delighted to stay here forever. We did have an issue with the internet (new router password) and getting one heater to work (unusual controls, missing instructions) but the owners/agency were quite responsive and we resolved these. We’d come here again in a heartbeat.

A lot of research was done on Kona prior to our visit and we determined that we would be spending most of our time in the South/East part of the island with a few excursions out of Kona itself. We were two couples so this property was perfect. We loved this place the second we walked in; it was spacious, well maintained, had everything you could possibly want or need. The beds were comfortable, the linen on the bedding was like a hug after a long day of hiking and sightseeing after a nice glass of wine on the lanai of course. We also made use of the lanai in the morning for coffee. With two separate bedroom/bathroom areas for each couple we all enjoyed our personal space when needed and came together in the common areas for meals and company.
Highly recommend this property.
Very Secluded

This place was amazing. The location is very isolated with thick foliage surrounding the house. We felt like we were all alone in the jungle. My kids loved it! The house is very spacious and well appointed. The town of Volcano is right by the national park and a short drive to Hilo. I would definitely stay in Volcano and at this house again.
Timeless relaxation and beauty

Easy access to many travel destinations in particular Volcano National Park. Beautiful clean home with ample room to sleep and have space to roam. Fully functional kitchen, three full bathrooms and secluded property with native plants and animals. This is ideal for a family or a couple looking to just be one with nature.

Great Getaway!
Rosemary & Paul P. · Sep 2019
The house is more than advertised. It’s very comfortable and has all that one would ever need. The check in process was quick and the information in the welcome package more than explanatory. The only thing I would suggest is for a thorough dusting of the cobwebs both inside and outside the house. There are also termites that fly in through the door gaps. Hope that they are not from the house! These are minor and expected in a home in the woods. All in all a great place to stay. A jacuzzi would make it even better...
Loved it

First time dealing with vacation rentals like Vacasa. I was not dissapointed!. The house is spacious and clean and stocked with basic necessities. For those who are worried about the fact that there is no AC, let me tell you, it was not needed. We were there in the middle of august and although it was very hot on the beaches and citties, it was not that hot in Volcano village. The humidity made it chilly, even. Enough that I started the gas fireplace one morning. Check-in was super easy. Thanks for the wonderful time!
So peaceful

Cant wait to stay again. The cabin feel with Thai twist. Spacious cabin with lots of windows and skylights!! Couldn’t see neighbors from anywhere on the property. (We live on Oahu where it’s overcrowded and property is postage stamp size so this was defiantly a perk.Convenience of everyday items in place when you need them that you don’t get in a resort!!! Fell in love!!!
Love it
Taiwan M. · Jun 2019
Location was perfect, it was right outside Hilo, the house is a wonderful cabin that seems like it's set in the middle of a rainforest. It was a great space with all the amenities of a hotel. So glad I booked this rather than a hotel, my kids loved it. One great perk I should mention is the cable TV had HBO, Showtime, Starz, DVR & all the movie channels and the house had washing machine & detergent. Everything anyone would need at their own house was available. We're hoping it will be available for all future trips, it's the only place my family wants to stay.
An ahead of the curve vacation rental
Zachary K. · Apr 2019
We had a fantastic time at this rental! From the moment we arrived it was clear that a lot of thought was put into everything here. The property is unique and beautiful in a really charming and remote location. You really have everything you could need here and nothing about the house is un-intuitive; everything is fairly straightforward. It only took us a few minutes to understand most everything we needed to know. We have stayed at many vacation rentals in our travels and this is the number 1 most frustrating aspect about most of them (figuring out how the house works.) Whenever a question arose about how a device might turn on or something, there was a handy, informative p-touch label there to guide us. We were also pleased to hear back right away from the property manager about a question (we were 99% certain we knew the answer to but were just checking for confirmation.)
Furthermore, the property is very beautifully and ingeniously designed from the ground up. The space is open and feels very comfortable and feng shui.
We would recommend this rental to anyone looking to find peace and quiet comfort and good amenities in close proximity to Volcanoes and we look forward to coming back one day (hopefully during a period of more active lava flow! ;-)
Beautiful, serene getaway.
