Manini Beachfront Getaway

We loved everything about our stay here. The house is ideally located just steps from the water. The neighborhood is peaceful and beautiful. The house is well equipped to cook, hang out, access the ocean or just chill out and enjoy the beautiful nature all around. Perfect place to get away for a bit.

We were six adults and very comfortable and cozy. The view was amazing as was the sound of the ocean throughout the day and night. A lovely mix of comfort in a somewhat wild environment.

We loved our stay in Kealakekua Bay! This home is well cared for and clean. The view of the bay is lovely, as is the lanai in the back garden. The layout of the home is definitely funky but our two family group (4 adults 3 kids) made it work. I’d probably hesitate to book again with the second “adult” room being detached in the basement but otherwise we really enjoyed our stay. The beach is right there, and we swam, explored tide pools and viewed the remnants of the village which is down the road. All very cool! It was nice being close enough to get to captain cook and south Kona but being kind of secluded in the quiet bay made for a peaceful retreat

In a quiet, tucked-away hamlet, my family enjoyed the proximity to the Volcano Park, the black and white sand beaches, and then coming home to this spacious yet charming abode. The pantry and kitchen were well-stocked. I also appreciated the beach chairs, umbrella and mat for our excursions.

The most beautiful location and view of the bay from the lounge. The house was well equipped with everything you could need. We had such a great time on the island, even got to see an erupting volcano (very blessed with the timing of that on our trip) Dolphins, turtles, and ray in the bay. AWESOME

Fantastic home and location in Captain Cook. Felt like we were in a treehouse on the bay. Well appointed home and kitchen with everything you could need. Incredible views and spacious enough for 6 adults and one kid to do everything we wanted. Plenty of fans to keep the house cool and we truly had a magical stay!

Great location & view! Loved seeing the whales & dolphins from our front lanai & just a short walk to see amazing sunsets. Granddaughters got quite a kick out of watching the house geckos & even named them!

The loacation & view were great! The space worked well for our 3 generations - 2 seniors, 4 young adults & 2 kids. When we were there we always opened the sliding doors to the front lanai & watched the whales & spinner dolphins in the bay! Priceless. We walked down to the beach & had amazing views of the sunset. Loved that there seemed to be more people walking than vehicles driving in the area.

Our holiday home on Kealakekua Bay met more than muster for our family of 6 ranging in age from 5-79. The house was pristine and furnished all desired amenitites. We had a direct view of the bay through wide, open, living room doors and lanai, and a short walk to the snorkeling area at Manini Beach. As Midwesterners, we could not have hoped for a more "exotic" Hawaiian experience.Highly, highly recommend.

This was the perfect spot for our family of six adults and one baby. The pictures do it justice and are not deceptive. The bedrooms are a bit quirky (other than the large top-floor master); if someone wished to hang out in the privacy of their own room this might not be right for them. The garage-level bedroom is a bit of an afterthought, somewhat dark and dank; its shower is outside and the half-bath is up the back lanai steps. The main-floor great room is a wonder! With all the doors open you are practically outside (get to know your neighborhood geckos!) but sitting pretty with a gentle breeze wafting in off Kealakekua Bay, assisted by numerous ceiling fans. Furnishings and artwork are attractive and island-appropriate. Kitchen is well-appointed. Linens and towels are practically new. The beds are quite comfortable. TV has many channels. Watch spinner dolphins cavort in the Bay off the front lanai, while the back lanai is quite private, surrounded with foliage - great for bird-watching and comfortable for group meals (the gas grill worked fine). Napo'op'o/Manini is down a twisty two lane road. Other than a kayak rental and sometimes fruit stand there is NO retail; everything you need to eat or buy are at least ten minutes away, while the city of Kailua-Kona is a half-hour drive. Manini Beach Park is a two minute walk away. “Beach” is a bit misleading; this is a grassy, waterfront park generously shaded by coconut trees. A trail goes out to the rocky western point, a great place to watch the sun set. There are no sandy beaches along Kealakekua Bay (a small one was swept away by a hurricane 30 years ago). The “sand” is fist-sized chunks of broken white coral and black lava. A little natural inlet in the park gives a spot from which you can swim. If there is an ocean swell this can be a bit tricky to navigate and might unnerve weak swimmers (the famous Two-Step is ten minutes away and can sometimes be difficult, too). Snorkeling is quite good just to the right or left; going straight out doesn't pay off. Many fish and surprisingly decent coral. Captain Cook Monument is a twenty minute paddle across the Bay; it has the best snorkeling in the state. Manini Beachfront Getaway is an idyllic retreat. Quiet hours are from 9PM to 8AM - be serenaded by the frogs at night! If you are open to them the neighbors are friendly and welcoming.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay at the Manini Beachfront Getaway. The location was perfect for accessing some of the best snorkeling on the island and the views were impeccable. The house was stocked with the essentials (and a few fun nonessentials like art supplies and outdoors equipment!) and clean upon arrival. For the one appliance that we did have issues with during our stay, Maintenance was fantastic and so easy to work with. Thank you! Our stay was unforgettable. To all those who do consider booking in the future, do keep in mind that there’s no AC. It can get quite warm sometimes on the island, but fortunately they have an assortment of fans!

Highly recommend this place. Beautiful house overlooking the bay. Very short distance to beach park with incredible snorkeling. Has a local vibe after driving down very curvy road to the bottom of mountain.

Loved this location - right across the bay from Captain Cook. We watched dolphins swimming in the bay each morning and enjoyed the sound of the ocean waves through the front lanai. The backyard was a tropical oasis with many birds and trees and a large deck to enjoy. The location offered lots of privacy and a 5 minute drive to Two-Step for great snorkeling. The bay in front of the house offered good snorkeling and a small park down the road allowed for easy access to the water. Washer and Dryer were very convenient and the house was well-maintained and clean.

First time staying in a VRBO. Wonderful experience. The home was beautiful, the location amazing. Oceanfront views out the front, with dolphins each morning in the bay. Jungle and tropical atmosphere in the back. A perfect escape! Very private and quiet (except for the birds each morning -lol!) Property was well-maintained and very clean. Communication with the property manager via text was very convenient and they replied very quickly to my questions. I would definetly go back to this property!

One of the bathrooms and one bedroom are only accessible from outside, which confused us at first but they were all clean. The house sits right on the bay and allows you to really open it up to let the breezes blow through. That made it comfortable through most of the day. The kitchen was well-appointed and clean. There is a great kayak rental place around the corner (Ehu and Kai's) which allows you to put in right from the bay rather than having to rent a kayak further up the hill and driving it down. They were very nice. There's also a small park nearby and a well-stocked fruit stand. The gardner gave us a great tip on a secluded sandy beach a short drive away (look up Ke'ei Beach) that was completely empty and had tons of coconut palms and tide pools to explore. The house is also not too far from a well-stocked supermarket just up the hill and is a short drive from Kona but far enough away to feel like you're out of the city. We had a great time and highly recommend this rental! Thank you for having us.

Location and quality

The home is nestled in a quiet area of the Big Island where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of Kealakehua bay. It's just steps away from the bay where you can watch the dolphins, snorkel, kayak, and take in stunning sunsets. The home is absolutely beautiful with custom finishes throughout. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need and there's even a barbeque on the back porch. The back porch has a large dining table and is surrounded by beautiful vegetation that screens out any neighbors so you feel like you're in your own private retreat. Other perks were the kayaks and beach toys. The host was great about checking in with us to make sure our stay was as pleasant as possible. This is the place to stay if you want to stay in a beautiful home in a gorgeous setting where you can unwind. I would definitely book here again

We normally don’t leave reviews, but this house made our vacation. The house was in a great location, very spacious (was very comfortable for 8 people), and well stocked. It had boogie boards, kayaks, beach chairs, towels, and a fully stocked kitchen. We enjoyed the perfect view of the ocean from the lanai and we were lucky enough to see dolphins. The back lanai was the perfect place to enjoy listening to the frogs and birds while surrounded by beautiful greenery. There was no traffic noise, just sounds of nature and the ocean waves. Snorkeling in the bay was amazing. Luke was great to deal with. We definitely will book this house again if we are fortunate enough to return.

This was a great place for us to stay and enjoy to the fullest. House has everything you need and wish for. Location is the best! You can enjoy ocean view while drinking coffee or preparing dinner. My favorite part was you get the ocean view in the front and garden view in the back. We watched dolphins play from the balcony while preparing breakfast. We saw turtles at the bay, enjoyed the most beautiful sunset which is steps away. Snorkeling is one of the best on the island by the monument. We had our scuba diving gear so we were able to enjoy the ocean even more. We loved the place and plan to come back. This will always be our dolphins house. Thank you for lifetime memories!

Close beach access just a few min walk away!! Made it really easy to get other go for the day or go back and fourth to the house through the day! Beautiful sunsets! Very relaxing!

The house was just what we needed - clean and comfy, close to the water, great views. We used the kayaks a few times and that was a highlight of the trip - we'd have used them daily if the weather had been calmer. Really enjoyed the opportunity to get into the water right from the house. Owner was communicative and helpful. Thanks!

Location was perfect and the view was amazing! We kayaked from the house to the Captain Cook monument, Lani the local kayak rental man down the street was a huge help getting us in the water! Close proximity to Two Step which is great for snorkeling and short distance drive to green sand beach, black sand beach and pebble beach. The home has no A/C but this seems to be typical of many Hawaii homes. It was warm, but we adapted. During the day we were out exploring the beautiful island and at night you would get a bit of a breeze off the water.

We LOVED this house! It isn't 'fancy' - but the location is unbeatable. We spent most of our time on the lawn or on the beach - or sitting in a tide pool (at low tide) with a beer. The snorkeling was better than on our booked snorkeling tours. The house is very well equipped and very comfortable. I would go back in a heartbeat!

This was our third trip to big island and we knew we wanted to be in Captain cook for great snorkelling. Just know you will be 30 to 40 minutes from Kona stores and restaurants. Otherwise this house has great location and set up. We had 7 adults and the house was perfect size. 4th bedroom is add on bedroom behind garage with 2 single beds, so i can see it being issue if you have 4 couples, deciding who stays there. We had a single, so it worked out well. Kitchen is well appointed. There are plenty of towels, and washer & dryer to keep them clean if you do the beach most days like us. We kayaked right out the front of the house almost every day. 2 double and 1 single kayak while we were there. Other gear icludes 2 bikes, 3 boogie boards, 2 beach chairs and 2 nice fishing poles. Snorkeling gear and beach shoes for 5 or 6. No hesitation in recommending this house.

We have stayed in the area on 3 separate occasions over the last 8 years, and in many ways this house was our favorite. The view of the water from the house is unbelievable. The master bedroom is like a private oasis with windows in all directions. The kitchen was very well appointed - it was set up better than any rental house I've ever stayed in. The living room was comfortable, and had a "wall" of doors that opened up to the bay, making it feel like you were outside. The backyard was lush and beautiful, with another large deck and patio table large enough to accommodate our party of 7. It is one of the few houses in the area that has 4 bedrooms, which was what we needed for our large group. If there was a down side, I would say it's that the bedrooms are very unequal in terms of size, amenities, and desirability. It worked out fine for our group, but if you had a group of 4 couples, it might be difficult to figure out who stays where. The room in the basement is cute, with it's own sitting area and a little mini fridge, but it smelled damp and had no bathroom, which could be a problem for some people. It was fine for the kids. The house said it came with kayaks for 7, but when we got there, one of the double kayaks was missing and another was being repaired, so we only had kayaks for 3. But we got one of the kayaks back during our stay after it was fixed. Overall, the location was amazing, the house was beautiful and comfortable, and we all had a lovely time. I would certainly stay there again.

This wonderful house met all of our expectations! It is located on a very quiet street with an unobstructed view and access to Captain Cook bay. Rick, the owner, provided kayaks and snorkel gear. The snorkeling near the Captain Cook monument was among the best we've ever seen! The house was comfortable for our family of 7, ages 9-74. All of us enjoyed the resident geckos and mongoose. Mosquitoes were a bit annoying but we chalked that up to part of being in our own private tropical paridise. If you want the hustle and bustle of Hawaii, it is an easy drive to Kona. Our week went much too quickly.

A beautiful view of the bay. A comfortable house with great amenities. It had just about everything we could ask for. A quiet neighborhood, we could hear the surf crashing at night. The owner was helpful with info about local activities. It was a short walk to 3 really good snorkeling spots. Short kayak trip across the bay to a great snorkeling spot, Capt. Cook. Short drive to another great snorkeling spot, Two Step. I would stay here again.

Tucked into a quiet neighborhood on a single lane road fronting a marine preserve with great snorkeling and kayaking just outside the door. Comfortable and thoughtfully furnished, a short drive to great food and a large market, kitchen is ready for cooking. Kayaks, snorkel gear and bikes provided for use are all in great shape. Perfect if you want time away from crowds and are interested in local history. Farmer's Market up the road on Saturdays. We will definitely come back!

This was our third trip to this house and it was as perfect as before. It really is a beautiful place to stay on vacation. I posted a review after the first year and nothing has changed from that. It really is fabulous!

There are beautiful areas to ride the bikes & great kayaking & snorkeling. Home is quiet & has an incredible open feel & ocean breezes that flow through the house when you open the large glass doors. We enjoyed our breakfast on the back patio while planning our adventures for the day, surrounded by lush green & beautiful flowers. Enjoyed a glass of wine at the end of the day on the front Lanai watching the waves crash on shore. A rare and beautiful home.

We loved our stay in this house--it is a great location right across the street from the Bay. We were lucky to swim with dolphins in the bay several times. The house is convenient to most locations including the Volcanoes and the North Shore beaches. We did not venture to Hilo as it was raining there most of our trip while it was beautiful every day in Captain Cook. The house is very well equipped and we enjoyed the kayaks quite a bit. The owner was responsive to our needs and we could not have been happier. We never wanted to leave!

Rick's house on Kealakekua Bay is spacious and beautiful. It is well designed, immaculate and it has everything you need for a great vacation. The old school Hawaiian style beach is a short walk down the road for swimming and relaxing . The house has great views of the bay, sunsets, the surf and even the Captain Cook monument across the bay. The area is full of Hawaiian history and archaeological monuments. It is well located right next to the bay with a great market at the top of the hill and a couple quaint villages near by for dining. I would definitely go back here. Thanks Rick! This house is set in an ideal location . There are beautiful views of Kealakekua Bay. Walking distance to Mene beach. The house is well equipped especially the kitchen. My daughter loves the bath tub. The house has a lot of art displayed. I think this is an ideal place for the over 30 crowd. Especially foodies. The house is fairly big so you could have 8 people in the house comfortably. Another good thing about the house is the outside shower. One thing to note the house has a lot of stairs. Overall I think this house is good for families / friends etc. I highly recommend this home.

It is paradise for me, the Place where I can relax, enjoy myself and get powerful. I´s really like heaven. After a 30 hours flight from Germany, I come to Big Island, to this beautyful house, and I feel at home at once. The same happens every time I bring friends with me. The rooms are comfortable and really beautyful equipped. You can find Hawaiian pictures and lamps inside. The house has a warm and positive energy. It is big and bright. You evenn have enouth place to dance. Everything you might need for preparing food is in the kitchen. Nothing that missing. There is a big barbecue on the garden terrace. You can sit here and take a long good breakfast and connect to the wonderful nature around you. You have a breath-taking view to the Pacific Ocean from the front terrace and also from the upper bedroom. Sometimes you can even see dolphins in front of the house, as they dance and jump in the air. Here, it is possible to swim with them and feel their warm heart-opening and light energy. I love doing it. The position of the house is wonderful, central and calm. It is ideal to make day trips in any directions on the island., either Mouna kea, Southpoint, Volcano Park, Botanic Garden, everything is possible. Restaurants and shopping facilities are within short reach. Near the house, you can find Manini Beach. Small but very beautyful. You can meet interesting people there and go snorkelling. At night, I listen to the melody of the ocean and believe to be at the most beautyful place on earth. I will always liove to return here, experience new things and be connected with the nature. We totally loved it here. My family - which included young children - had the best time ever! It was exactly as described - but better! I cannot think of a single negative (and I'm fairly fussy). It is right down on the bay and we were able to kayak out amongst the dolphins, snorkel, and play on the small beach just next to the house. The owner provides kayaks and life jackets, as well as snorkel equipment, boards and some beach toys. We spent some afternoons visiting beaches in the area recommended in the guidebook, but then discovered a beach a five minute drive long the bay which was quieter and much nicer than all the others. We were all able to snorkel from there and the kids did some body boarding. You could even surf if you had any experience. You could walk to it but we didn't want to with the little legs in our group and all the beach toys we were carting around! The house is well located for everything. There is a big grocery store on the main road, as well as coffee shops and some cafes, restaurants and even an ice cream place! Everything is a drive away so you will need a car, but that wasn't a hassle for us at all. It's about a 30 minute drive from the airport. The inside of the house was good too - decent bathrooms, a well equipped kitchen and comfortable beds. From the balcony you can see whales and dolphins and you can hear and see the sea from every room. The owner of the property was very friendly and helpful. We've stayed in a lot of vrbo's, and this rates top of the list. We didn't want to leave! The location is amazing and the house was exactly what we had hoped for. Thanks for letting us stay - we would love to come back again!

My family met in Hawaii to celebrate my upcoming 70th birthday, so this house had to fit many needs from young to older! And for one week, it was a delightful place to meet, hang out, visit, snorkel, tour, and eat! The house was clean and extremely well maintained. The reports are true, we did simply snorkel from right in front of the house and see turtles, dolphins, live coral and many kinds of tropical fish. And, on the verandah one late afternoon, we watched whales in the bay. I could hardly get my kids and older grandkids out of the water. For the very young, there is a small white sand beach and water play area with a picnic-park, just a short walk away. The kids loved roaming around the backyard and bringing in lilikoi (passion fruit) from which we made the owner's favorite ice-cream! YUM! The papaya and bananas were not quite ready (sigh). Our grandchildren loved and named each gecko; they are a beautiful green and larger than any I've seen before and just set the stage of island living. The kitchen, appliances and kitchenware of all kind rivals mine at home - a chef's delight. We cooked outdoors and ate on the deck most evenings to the sound of the waves. The beach house is completely outfit with good quality play-toys as snorkel gear (much better than rentals), boogie boards, kayaks and bicycles and in the week we were there, we used it all! I'm a rural Idaho gal, but there is something so very special about waking up to roosters crowing and waves slapping. From each bedroom you could listen to the waves and water all night long; in fact we kept the house open except when we were gone and enjoyed the tropical life to the max. While we enjoyed our days away (one to the Volcano Park and one across island to Hilo) we almost wished we'd stayed "at home" because of nice little trips in the direct environ as "the painted church", beautiful scenery, The City of Refuge State Park, a fishing trip, lots of organic farms, coffee growing and farmers coops to buy gifts and stock up on local food! If you are hankering for a restaurant, an ice-cream and coffee shop, there is a great local strip just minutes away. People are super friendly throughout this small community just 30 minutes to the south of Kona (telling folk lore and stories about the tsunami). Heaven it was! Now we are all in shock as we've returned to the frigid Pacific northwest and Wyoming. We will be back, you can believe it and it cannot be soon enough!

We stayed for nearly two weeks and enjoyed the location, the home…everything. The owner was great to work with and very responsive. We had a family of 6 so we occupied all of the main house bedrooms. It is in a neighborhood so you have to remember that while we were on CST everyone else was 4 hours behind us. We tried to be respectful of our noise in the evening and early morning. We enjoyed using the bikes around the neighborhood. This isn’t for someone who is looking to lay out on a sandy beach. This area is made up of beautiful shoreline of volcanic rock. The views are breathtaking, but sandy beaches are on the north end of the island which we did on several occasions, allowing 90 minutes to drive to the beaches near Hapuna or Mauna Kea. These beach parking lots fill up fast so best to be early (by 9:30 AM). The snorkeling across the street is amazing. We have visited the islands over 20 times (family use to live on Maui) and have snorkeled and dived around most of them. Kaelekakua Bay is one of the best. I would suggest you explore to see how wonderful this protected area truly is. There are other snorkeling areas as well if you are up to exploring. The owner has kayaks available (2 singles and 2 doubles). This was an incredible opportunity to go out in into the bay which we did several times. It is hard to imagine that this place was hit by the tsunami three years ago. Yes, some of the nearby homes still show damage. The water is crystal clear, the coral is thriving, and the Manini Beach Park, a short 2 minute walk, is a great quiet place to relax. We “sunbathed” on the grass watching the waves many times. It is a great spot where locals far outnumber tourists. The location is off the beaten path but yet convenient. Decent grocery stores and good local restaurants only 15 minutes away. The home was perfectly equipped. Don’t expect hotel like service, but we quickly found ourselves not wanting to leave. The owner has done a good job of providing the basics. The home was clean and comfortable with amazing views. A perfectly comfortable setting. But since it is someone’s home, we did experience some things that weren’t in perfect order. The grill needed cleaning and some of the appliances were not in perfect working order. Washer and dryer were new and the laundry area was clean which was much appreciated. But hey…this is Hawaii and we loved it all!

I've been to Hawaii a bunch of times, this is the 2nd time at a Kealakekua Bay rental house, and this one is my favorite. It was important for us to be on the water, and Manini Beach House is about 75 feet from the water where we were able to wade into the water and snorkel from there; or walk about 300 feet to the Manini Beach Park where there is a sandy open spot that was very safe for kids to play at. This beach is what my wife calls her "happiest place in the world." The house is beautiful - tiled floor throughout, beautiful wood trim, all the kitchen appliances and accessories (even an ice cream maker), granite counter tops, a large back yard deck where you have your big meals at. There are two floors in the main part of the house with 3 bedrooms, and 3 bathrooms, and a small apartment style place in the bottom basement area. There are plenty of showers in the house, but there is also one outside under the stairs - great to wash off from snorkeling/swimming. The view from the patio is wonderful as you can see 90% of the bay from there - we watched a baby humpback that looked like it had just been born that night or early morning with its mother (this is early Feb '13 btw). The house was nicely decorated. You could tell the owner liked fishing, but was certainly not over the top - as my wife would put it. If you are into fishing, then you must ask the owner for references. He referred us to a local who took us out fishing for a very reasonable price. The fishing season hadn't quite started, but we caught a few Skip Jack's and saw a ton of sea life - big pod of pilot whales, about 50+ dolphins, and a saw two sets of humpback whales - the guy who took us out said we were very lucky to see all of that. We did a lot on this trip, but the fishing was the highlight. I can't recommend this house enough. My wife and I, as well as the couple we went with, all said we must bring other family and friends back to this house if we can ever get folks to come to Hawaii with us. I've never met the owner, but he was very prompt in returning calls and/or emailing us back. Only draw back of this place is there are from time to time people that slow down on the street to take pictures of the place or write down the phone number for their next visit - i don't blame them. I highly recommend his house.

We rented this house for 3 months last winter in order to have our baby on the big island. It was the perfect place to rest up before our baby's arrival and to welcome her home to. The house is comfortable, well equipped and nicely put together. The owner has good taste and it is nicely decorated. The house has a large upstairs bedroom that provides for a lot of privacy and the two downstairs bedrooms are comfortable also. The kitchen has everything you could want - and there is a bbq on the back deck. The front porch doors are accordion doors that you can open all the way to have a beautiful view of Kealakekua Bay - it feels like you're at the beach in your own living room. We rented the house for a return vacation this summer and it has proven to be just as comfortable and charming as our first visit. The house is a 1 minute walk to the lovely Manini Beach where there is great snorkeling, kayaking and swimming. The area is very quiet and peaceful. The perfect place to relax and enjoy! I would highly recommend this house to anyone.
